ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge (ASC, is proposed by China and has been getting supports from dozens of countries and regions experts. Inspur and many other trusted industry professionals have also helped us.


As one of the top three international student supercomputer competitions, ASC has advanced in popularity, team level, and contest difficulties. The goal of the challenge is to promote the exchange and cultivation of young talent in all countries and regions on supercomputers, as well as to improve supercomputer application level and R&D capacity. Both ASC13 and ASC14 achieved great success. The MIC application optimization has always been highly featured.


In 2014 ASC Student Supercomputer Challenge, “Three dimensional P-wave and S-wave separation of the elastic wave equation simulation method” (3D-EW) was chosen to be the test question for MIC application optimization. The codes of 3D-EW was provided by China National Petroleum Co. (BGP). The major computing of 3D-EW relies on high accuracy finite difference alternating algorithm method. The main characteristics of this method are small dispersion, highly precision of calculation, huge calculation volume and highly expansion potential.


The 3D-EW question was adopted for both the preliminary contest and the final of ASC14. In the preliminary contest, the team from Taiyuan University of technology achieved over 400 times speed-up ratio on 4 HPC nodes and became the biggest dark horse. In the final, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University demonstrated their HPC ability by migrated 3D-EW from serial to parallel,  ported it from CPU to CPU+MIC, and conducted the tests on Tianhe-2, eventually scale up to 1,024 nodes (200K cores) with near linear speedup. That is why they won the e Prize award, brand new adwards.  ASC hopes the e Prize become ‘Gordon Bell Prize’ of youth talents.

ASC15 has been grandly launched with the opening of registration and contest question selection. The qualified contest questions will be provided to all ASC15 international teams. 


In order to be practical, challengeable, interesting; and to ensure the high level standard of the contest, ASC15 committee calls for the application of the test questions of MIC application optimization with the criteria bellow:

1,The question should base on reasonable research or production, has certain impacts, and requires both performance improvement and large-scale supercomputing; Application area is not restricted. 

2,Application should have high parallelism in physical algorithm, algorithm flow clear, and have scalability potential.

3,Source codes of application are needed. The program running platform is Linux system, the source codes of core part can be in C, C++ or FORTRAN language; related notes should be added.

Provide three sets of workloads in different size. Related documents for   application compile, operation method, performance and verification are welcomed. 

For all the applications:

1,The ASC committee requires each contest team to sign the confidential agreement, obey the rule that the application can only be used as contest question for ASC.

2,Qualified applicants will be invited as the members of the ASC15 evaluation committee.

3,The optimized codes from the winning team will be shared to the original supplier.
